Atiba Local Government was one of the 183 Local Councils created by General Sanni Abacha military administration on December 4, 1996 which brought the total number of local government in the country to 774.

 It has its administrative headquarter at Ofa-Meta, Oyo-a place of historic significance in Oyo history. The Local Government was named after Alaafin Abiodun Atiba – 18th Century Alaafin who played a singular significant role in preserving Yoruba heritage during the Colonial rule and was also the first Alaafin to be crowned in the present Oyo City  which falls within the Council Area.
